Acupuncture & Moxibustion

Acupuncture is part of a safe and effective tradition, used by millions of people in Asia over thousands of years. Even today in China, acupuncture and herbal medicine are used alongside western medicine, in hundreds of state run hospitals.

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles into different parts of the body, adjusting the flow of energy (Qi) within a network of channels that link the organs and systems of the body. This helps to restore good health by stimulating the bodies own innate healing ability.

Acupuncture is therefore a very natural form of medicine, in that it does not rely on drugs to create a change. It is however, also safe to use alongside conventional western medication.

How it works

Acupuncture can treat many different problems and is a very powerful tool to restore harmony to a persons body mind and spirit. The World Health Organisation list many conditions acupuncture is proven to be effective for, and the Journal of Chinese medicine carry a large database of  acupuncture research and what it can treat.

With Acupuncture we treat the person, not just a condition or symptom. Chinese medicine understands how different physical and emotional symptoms are connected and aims to bring all aspects of a person back into harmony.

We always aim to address the root of the problem and not just the symptom which is often a manifestation of deeper imbalance. This way a longer lasting resolution can be achieved.

During a course of acupuncture treatment a persons general health is more likely to improve as well as  the presenting problem. Improved sleep, better energy levels, and a happier state of mind, are all indicators that balance to all aspects of a person are being restored.

Generally, improvements are seen within the first few treatments, and often after the first session.  Naturally, more chronic long term conditions take longer to completely resolve than shorter more acute problems of a few weeks or months. Acupuncture can also be used preventatively to strengthen weak parts of the constitution, or just when one is feeling run down and before symptoms manifest.

Acupuncture not only restores health, it helps people understand how to live in harmony with their body and mind and make good choices. Good health is not just about the absense of disease it is about achieving your highest potential in this life.

As a teacher of Tai Chi and Qi Gong I work closely with all my patients to select exercises, stretches, self massage routines, and meditations to support the acupuncture treatment. Together with dietry and lifestyle advice, this is often the key to patients getting well quicker, and staying well once treatment has finished.
